Workshops for Adults

Humber Nature Programs now offers several workshops for adults.  These include Teacher Workshops which introduce the Arboretum to teachers and educators, a series of general interest environmental workshops called Thinking Environmentally, and a series of Environmental Education Workshops for teachers and educators. We can also rework children's programs for adult participants, or we can customize workshops on other topics.  If you are interested in a specific topic that is not covered by one of these workshops, in customizing a workshop to suit your needs, or in setting up a day long workshop event for your group please contact us.

Teacher Workshops

Perhaps the faculty at your school would like to become more familiar with the plants and wildlife of the Arboretum or learn some new nature activities to use in the classroom or school yard. Give us a call to arrange a workshop to suit your needs. These workshops can be combined with one of the Environmental Education workshops  to create a day long event. Lunch can be provided. This is a great way to spend a professional development day.

Workshop Series

The two series of workshops described below are offered through the continuing education department at Humber College.  Participants may choose to take one workshop, or to work towards the completion of a certificate of participation.  All workshops are 3 hours long and offered on weekday evenings and weekends.

What to Expect

All the workshops described below are taught using popular education methods.   They will include discussion of concepts, ideas, personal opinions and values, active games and activities, and a very small amount of reading/lecturing.  Some workshops may include discussing personal values and experiences.  If possible at least part of the workshop time will be spent outside.  Please come dressed for the weather.    To register for these see Humber College's part time studies website here: http://calendardb.humber.ca/LIS/WebCalendar/CE/SubjectArea/details.do?name=Environmental+Studies

Thinking Environmentally

Environmental issues are becoming more and more important.  It is therefore important to learn how to understand these issues and react to them. In this workshop series principals of environmentalism and environmental thinking will be examined.  Students will learn to “think environmentally”, to see the connections that exist between everything, to understand how our lives are impacted by and impact upon the environment. What is the environment?  What is environmentalism?  What is nature? How are our actions, our everyday lives, and world issues connected to the environment?

CUE. 101: Introduction to Environmentalism:   Environmentalism is becoming more important – but what is it?  What isn’t environmentalism? In this workshop the history of the environmental movement, different types of environmentalism (deep ecology, eco-socialism, eco-feminism, bioregionalism…), our personal understandings of environmentalism, and the “ultimate goal” of environmental action will be discussed.

CUE. 102:  Nature and the Environment:
Everyone seems to be talking about protecting “the environment”.  What is “the environment” that we are trying to protect?  Where is the line between nature and human/manmade? This workshop will attempt to address these questions.

CUE. 103: Environmental Identity:
This workshop looks at how our understandings of environmental ideas are incorporated into our identities.  What does it mean to define ourselves as environmentalists or as people concerned about the environment?  This workshop will also consider other ways of understanding identity and environmental identity.

CUE. 104: Everything's Connected - Ecosystems and Systems Theory:
This workshop will examine the connections that exist between everything – between humans and the natural world, between species, between environments…  What can understanding these connections teach us about ourselves, our actions, and our environmental ideas?

CUE. 105: Environmental Action: How do we include our concerns for the environment into our everyday lives?  What actions can we take to reduce our negative impact on the environment?  Participants will share ideas and actions that we take on behalf of our environments.  Psychological research on “proenvironmental” behaviour and behaviour change will also be examined.

CUE. 106: Environmental Ideas and Ethics:  Some environmentalists understand environmentalism as a “protest on behalf of value” (Evernden, 1999; p. 33).  In other words, environmentalism is a concern for how we, as humans, assign value, particularly how we assign value to our environments.  This workshop will look at how environmental ideas and ethics differ from or are similar to our own values and cultural values.  The focus of this workshop will be on our own personal environmental ethics and ideas.

CUE. 107: Staying Hopeful about the Environment: This workshop will focus on Joanna Macy’s work with hope and despair.  We will talk about our fears for the world and about how to prevent these fears from paralyzing us.  This workshop will include sharing of our personal hopes and fears.

Environmental Education Workshops

Ontario curriculum has been deficient in its coverage of environmental topics.  The acceptance of the Bondar report signals a much needed change.   These workshops are designed to help the teacher/facilitator  to incorporate important environmental issues into classroom topics.  Environmental games and activities will be included in these workshops.  Principles and practice of environmental education will be examined.

These workshops will be especially helpful for teachers, ECEs, and students planning to become ECEs or teachers.  However, anyone is welcome to participate.

Workshops

CUE. 110: Introduction to Environmental Education:  The fundamentals of environmental education will be considered.  The history of EE, the importance of EE, various approaches to EE, and ideas, attitudes and values that contribute to EE will be examined.  EE practices and future directions for EE will be critically examined.

CUE. 120: Teaching Environmental Topics to Young Children:   Research shows that it is very important to teach children about their natural environment, and to expose them to natural settings.  Looking at  the importance of EE, this workshop will examine various approaches to EE for young children. EE games and activities will be presented.  Please bring one or more EE activities/games that can be shared with the group.  We will compile these activities, and if time permits try some of them.

CUE. 130: Teaching Environmental Topics to Youth and Young Adults:
Teaching youth and getting them involved in environmental issues can be difficult.  Engaging youth with environmental ideas and fostering ecological intelligence will be examined.  EE games and activities will be presented. Please bring one or more EE activities/games that can be shared with the group.  We will compile these activities, and if time permits try some of them.

CUE. 140: Teaching Environmental Topics to Adults:
Change in how we interact with and impact upon our natural environments is urgently neededTherefore, it is important to reach those who have the power to make these changes.  This workshop will look at the challenges and advantages of teaching EE to adults.  Ways to encourage positive, environmental behaviours will also be discussed.  EE games and activities will be presented.   Please bring one or more EE activities/games that can be shared with the group.  We will compile these activities, and if time permits try some of them.

CUE. 150: Including environmental Literacy across the curriculum: Environmental issues may not be explicitly included in all courses, and yet everything humans do impact on our environments.  This workshop will attempt to address the inclusion of environmental ideas, value, consciousness, and ecological intelligence into every class.  This workshop will also examine the connections between human behaviours and our environment.  Ways of incorporating this understanding into educational settings will be discussed.

CUE. 160: Green schools, green classrooms:
Students (both children and adults) learn by example.  This course will examine ways in which educators can set a good environmental example in their schools and classrooms.  Ways that schools, teachers, and students can help local and global environments will be discussed. Ideas such as waste reduction programs, greening school grounds and classrooms, and environmental clubs and groups will be presented. Encouraging environmental awareness, and positive environmental action in students, the school, local communities and beyond will also be examined.

The Instructors

Rebecca Niblett: BScH (psychology), Master in Environmental Studies and a Diploma in Environmental and Sustainability Education

Popular/Critical Educator and Environmentalist Rebecca Niblett has facilitated environmental education workshops for both children and adults using popular education methods.  She also taught ESL in South Korea using critical education techniques and activities.  Rebecca is currently working as a Nature Interpreter at the Humber Arboretum Centre for Urban Ecology.

What is Popular Education?

Popular education – founded primarily on the works of South American educators such as Paulo Freire – is education that is based on the experience of the participants.   Both participants and facilitators are believed to benefit from a learning experience.  Popular educators do not believe education to be a neutral or individual process.  Popular education is often used to enable participants to view the world in new ways and to encourage action.

Lynn Short: BScH (biology/chemistry), BEd (specialty in intermediate science and math)

Lynn Short taught grades 4 through 8, in the TDSB, for 12 years.  She has been working as a Nature Interpreter teaching environmental programs to children and community groups at the Humber Arboretum Centre for Urban Ecology for 3 years.
