Travelling Nature Interpreters

Humber Nature Programs is proud to present our Travelling Nature Programs.  Invite one of our Nature Interpreters to your classroom.  Choose a program for your grade and open the doorway for the children to explore Outdoor Education!

Making "Senses" of Nature:  JK/SK - Gr. 1
Explore  your environment to discover what natural items touch your senses.  Interpreters will bring natural samples and present games that will help the students use their senses.  This adventure will happen both inside the classroom and outside in your outdoor classroom.

Discover Insects in Your World:  J/K - Gr. 4
Following a brief introduction to the fascinating world of insects and after examining samples of insects,  students will explore and compare the insects found in different habitats.  Magnifiers, field guides and activities will help reveal the secrets of some of these tiny but important creatures.  All captured creatures will be released unharmed back into their home environment.

Urban Wildlife & Plants:  Gr. 1 - 4
Students will explore nature in their urban environment.  Focus will be on what urban areas are, why public green spaces are so important for wildlife, and  how certain animals have adapted to life in urban areas. Also, students will learn about native plants and actions they may take to reduce invasive plant species.

Weather:  Gr. 5
Learn the difference between climate and weather and how changes in weather affect people, plants and animals alike.  Discover how temperature, wind and moisture create our daily weather.  Students will be introduced to various weather forecasting methods and instruments used to measure weather conditions.

Amazing Animal Structures:  Gr. 3 - 4
Explore the wonder of the natural world by discovering amazing animal structures and how they compare to man made structures in our urban environments.  Investigate design features and factors that affect the stability of several natural structures while getting some hands-on experience building one of nature's common structures.

Huron People & First Nation Games:  Gr. 3
Journey back in time and explore ways in which life was different for the Huron People.  First Nation artifacts will be part of this presentation.   The First Nations People played many games to develop skills, strength and camaraderie.  Students will enjoy learning about some native customs and participating in different activites.

Orienteering:  Gr. 5
After an introduction to the fundamentals of compass and map reading, students take part in orienteering activities that utilize their new skills.  A Nature Interpreter will be present to provide guidance, give tips and reinforce compass and map reading skills.

Ecology Games:
Gr. 4
What is ecology?  Through a variety of fun filled interactive games, students will learn that everything from bacteria to top predators fulfills an important role in our environment.

Ecological Footprint:
Gr. 5
The way we live has both a local and global impact.  Students will discover approximately how big their ecological footprint is and discuss ways in which they can shrink it.  Activities will reinforce the need to consider everyday actions so we can preserve and optimize our diminishing resources and reduce pollution.

School Yard Nature Walks:  All grades
Our Nature Interpreter will guide your students on a Nature Walk through your green spaces or school yard, even if it is just a field or asphalt.  Discover nature all around as students take part in exploratory activites designed to look closely at nature in their school yard environment.  They may find everything from insects to habitats, rocks and minerals to urban wildlife.  Take a hike in your own "backyard!"
